Flying Chickens Affect HR Hiring Practices

By Sarah Maxwell, Human Resources Business Partner

I've worked in the Human Resources field since I was in my early 20’s and have been fortunate to work with some amazing people throughout my career, but none quite like Nexus 5 Group! Nexus is a unique, fun, and hardworking team.

As Nexus 5 Group was branding, John Hinman and Tom Cowan took the time to really describe their vision of company values and culture. Their excitement and passion were infectious.

The challenge: To grow, we needed more people and I was the first line of defense to assure we continued to build and maintain the Nexus 5 Group culture throughout growth.

Human Resource professionals enjoy connecting and helping people.

Recruiting and welcoming new team members is one of the best aspects of my job! Service and Construction was a new industry to recruit, and I really wanted to get it right. Each member of the Nexus 5 Group team has their own distinctive personality that brings something special to the table. Finding the right mix of skill set, dedication and fun can make recruiting a challenge. While I pay close attention to interview answers that pertain to the role, I am also trying to get a feel for “team fit”.

As HR personnel, sometimes we must ask ourselves odd questions such as, "Will the quirks that I find entertaining in the Nexus 5 Group office, such as flying rubber chickens, be something this candidate will appreciate?"

The Interview

Potential candidates often say that one of the most important things they're looking for in their next job is a great company culture. They also want a place they'll look forward to going to every day.

I smile to myself and tell candidates what an amazing company culture that Nexus 5 Group has built. “Work hard, play hard” comes to mind, but that does not begin to describe it. Team members take pride in their work and genuinely care about one another and their clients.

Sometimes, you'll hear the ringing bell because someone just did something awesome. They make it a point to celebrate wins as a team… or you may hear one of your favorite songs from the 90’s playing through their speakers. You may walk through the office and need to dodge a flying chicken, a remote-controlled truck, or a soccer ball! At any time, you'll be greeted by smiling faces from a team that absolutely loves their job.

As an HR professional, it's rewarding to find and match candidates to the perfect role and watch them flourish within the culture and company. The only thing better is reading client testimonials of how team members knocked a job out of the park and exceeded expectations.

Working with Nexus 5 Group is a huge highlight to my role. I enjoy our partnership so much... it doesn't feel like work at all. As you can imagine, the easy part of recruiting for Nexus 5 Group is telling candidates how much I love the company, the culture, and why.

The challenge remains the same, but growth has increased the number of flying chickens in the office.

I am honored to be a part of the Nexus 5 team. Serve well!
