By Josh McDonald, Senior Project Manager with Nexus 5 Group
As part of Kansas City Corporate Challenge, Nexus 5 Group was given the opportunity to host a blood drive through the American Red Cross. Jennifer McKee, Project Coordinator, scheduled the blood drive, rallied the troops, and tended to the needs of the day at the Nexus 5 training room. A huge THANKS to Jen for spearheading this event!
Every Two Seconds
According to the American Red Cross’ website, “Every two seconds, someone in the U.S. needs blood. Blood is essential to help patients survive surgeries, cancer treatment, chronic illnesses, and traumatic injuries. This lifesaving care starts with one person making a generous donation. The need for blood is constant. But only about 3% of age-eligible people donate blood yearly. You can help the American Red Cross make sure that supply meets demand.”
45 Lives Saved?
Of the participants that day, 16 were first time blood donors with the Red Cross. In total, it is estimated that 45 potential lives were saved due to the donors’ generosity and willingness to take an hour out of their day. Participants were given the option of “whole blood donation” or “power red donation.” Power Red donation “enables the donor to safely donate two units of red blood cells at just one appointment.” How cool is that?!?
Finding or Hosting a Blood Drive
We are looking forward to scheduling another drive in the fall. The need for donors is as high as ever. There are many ways to make an impact in your community. This is a simple process that makes a HUGE difference. To check out how you can give or to host a blood drive yourself, go to Find a Blood Drive Near You or Host a Blood Drive.
